Nurturing Leaders for Tomorrow's World

¡Hola!

I’m Srta. Emily Helgerson and I teach second grade here at ISLA.  I cannot imagine a better place to work or a better group of students to work with.  I believe strongly in both language immersion and the international baccalaureate program, especially since I am the grateful product of the power of both of these programs.  I graduated with my high school IB diploma in 2005 and from college with licensure in Spanish Education K-12 and Elementary Education in 2009.  Some of my favorite parts about school is sharing wonderful books with children and engaging them with strategies and ideas that they haven’t encountered before.  I’m excited for a great year!

Schedule:

Gym: Mondays and Wednesdays.

Music Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Movement: Fridays.

Art: Every other Thursday.

Our English language arts time is 2:45-3:15.

Essential Agreements for the class:

1. Tenemos empatía con los demás. (We have empathy with others)

2. Escuchamos a la persona en turno.  (We listen to the person that is speaking)

3. Hablamos el español. (We speak Spanish)

4. Seguimos el perfil de la comunidad de aprendizaje. (We follow the IB profile of the learner)

Guidelines for Srta. Helgerson's second grade:

Toys:  Students are not to bring toys to school.  They can have a lot of fun playing with their classmates and games and equipment we have at school.  If a student brings a toy to class they will put it in their backpacks.  If it happens again I will keep it until Friday. This includes non-toy items like jewelry if it is used inappropriately.

Snack:  Students may bring a snack to eat during the first recess of the day.  The only guideline I have is that they should not bring candy.

Casa folders: Please help your student remember to bring their red casa folder home and back to school every day.  It is an important method of communication between home and school.

Notes to me or the office:  If you send your child to school with a note from home, please put it in their casa folders.
