Nurturing Leaders for Tomorrow's World

Hola , I am Dayra Lorena De La Cruz, first grade teacher at International Spanish Language Academy. I was born in Colombia. I went to school there to become a teacher. I graduated from Santiago de Cali University. I taught for nine years in Colombia and this is my second year teaching in the United States. I think it's very important for people to know more than one language. That's why I love teaching so much at this school. I have an opportunity to teach my students Spanish and to share my culture and introduce Colombia to them. I was lucky to work in Colombia teaching all age groups of people but I found that I enjoyed teaching young children the most.

The following are the behavior expectations in first grade:

1.      “Dame 5”

2.      3 cards (green, yellow, red) and stamps/stickers/notes in “Cuaderno de comunicación.”

3.      Triangle of logical consequences (descanso, loss of privilege, you break it you fix it)

4.      Descanso—students take a break for up to 3 minutes to reflect on behavior.

5.      Buddy room (if “descanso” is has been used many times and not effective in changing a behavior, students will be sent to the teacher’s “buddy room” for several minutes).

Central Ideas

Families vary, yet share commonality.

People invent things to improve quality of the life and to connect with others around the word.

Dancing is a cultural expression that people use to demonstrate their feelings, beliefs, similarities and differences

Insects change forms throughout life cycles.

People are organized into various places, all of which have their own symbols and laws.

Right and responsibilities at home, in the community, in the world connect to human action.
