I just want to thank you all for giving your child the wonderful gift of bilingualism. It is something invaluable that they will benefit from endlessly. As they go through the process of learning the language, let me know anytime you have questions. Thanks for all your support!
Library – the public libraries have a decent selection of Spanish books for children. Some of these books have Spanish and English and many of them are books that the students already know in English. We read the Spanish version of A Very Hungry Caterpillar in our class. When I went to the library I asked the librarian and she showed me all the children’s books they had in Spanish. You can also go online and “order” the books you would like and they will hold them at your local library. Here is the website for the Hennepin County Public Library: www.hclib.org.
Scholastic Book Order – I will be sending home a Scholastic book order sheet each month with many Spanish titles. The prices are usually quite good and each time you buy a book for your child our class accumulates points to buy books for our classroom.
Amazon.com – I have found that they have great prices on books and a large selection of books in Spanish. If there is a title you know of in English and would like it in Spanish you can usually just type the book name and then Spanish in the search bar.
Music – Jose-Luis Orozco has a wonderful collection of Spanish children’s songs. Many of them are the songs that Latin-American children learn growing up.I bought the CD “De Colores and Other Latin-American Folk Songs for Children”.I bought it used on Amazon.com for less than $6 including shipping! The students listen to this CD each time they are coloring something or while we have transition time and some of them are even starting to sing along!
Adult language classes – The Spanish Institute has some Spanish immersion classes for adults if any of you are interested in learning Spanish as well. Here is the website: www.spanishin.us.
Family Fiesta at the Minnesota Zoo – There will be a “Family Fiesta” at the zoo on Saturday, September 29.Check out their website for more information: www.mnzoo.com.
