Thank you for enrolling your child at ISLA. The Tucker Signing Strategies for Reading are powerful, supplemental strategies for decoding, which teachers use along with the reading program. It is a system of hand signs that elicit associations between letters or word chunks and the sounds they represent. Children enjoy using these hand signs. They appeal to reluctant readers, to active children, and those with learning disabilities, as well as to average readers. The reader sees the letter, signs the sound, and says the sound at the same time. This multi-sensory combination provides success to readers who have not succeeded before. The Tucker Signs provide the mental model that many children need in order to become successful readers, while giving the observer insight into what is going on in the reader’s mind. This strategy moves the responsibility of decoding unfamiliar words from the teacher to the child.
